Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF)

The most important goal of our Early Childhood Program is to help children become enthusiastic learners. This means encouraging children to be active and creative explorers who are not afraid to try out their ideas and to think their own thoughts. We aim to help children become independent, self-confident and inquisitive learners. By fostering a love of learning and healthy self-esteem we hope to provide each child with a strong foundation for their futearly years learning framework eylfure education.

We believe that children learn best through active exploration of their environment. Active learning requires thinking and experimenting to find out how things work and to learn firsthand about the world we live in. This is why we place a strong emphasis on proving a safe and caring environment in which children have the opportunity to explore, experiment, discover and ask questions. The activities we plan and the way in which we organise the environment, select resources and interact with the children are all designed to ensure that each child leaves My Kindy with happy memories, a positive self-concept and all the skills that they need for a successful start to school.

We use the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) to guide our program planning. The EYLF, developed by the Council of Australian Governments, has an overall goal "to extend and enrich children's learning from birth to five years so that all children have the best start in life to create a better future for themselves and for the nation."

The five learning outcomes of the EYLF are:

  • Children have a strong sense of identity.
  • Children are connected with and contribute to their world.
  • Children have a strong sense of wellbeing.
  • Children are confident and involved learners.
  • Children are effective communicators.

The Early Years Learning Framework describes childhood as a time of "belonging, being and becoming".

  • Belonging is the basis for living a fulfilling life. Children feel they belong because of the relationships they have with their family, community, culture and place.
  • Being is about living in the here and now. Childhood is a special time in life and children need time to just ‘be' – time to play, try new things and have fun.
  • Becoming is about the learning and development that young children experience. Children start to form their sense of identity from an early age, which shapes the type of adult they will become.

As staff observe and interact with the children and families each day, they gather information about each child's interests, strengths and needs. Using the principles within the EYLF, they evaluate this information and plan activities to promote each child's growth and development.

We maintain a record of each child's progress in the form of a digital portfolio. Families can view their child's portfolio at any time. A copy of the portfolio is also provided to families at the end of the year.
